Identity Mapping workshop + a bit of a blog

The February Identity Mapping workshop is just a few days away and I am looking forward to it. If you have been in deep contemplation around attending, there are 2 spots left! Please get in touch if you would like to attend.

There has been a change in venue for the Friday evening portion of the workshop. It is now in downtown Seattle at:

The Lloyd Building
603 Stewart St, Suite 502
*main door is on Stewart Street, between the teriyaki place and Spex

It’s a quick downhill bus ride, (#10 or 11) walk or bicycle from Capitol Hill. If you are driving, there is $5 evening parking available nearby (see attached map). I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Please be sure to eat before, bring water, and maybe even hot coffee or tea. I will be providing workbooks with blank space for capturing your thoughts but feel free to bring a journal.

We will be meeting as planned at Seattle Yoga Arts on Saturday, 9:00 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.

A Bit of a Blog
In anticipation of this workshop, I have been reflecting on what a true practice it is to create a life that is a reflection of who I am. I find myself easily caught up in what is urgent rather than important. I admit I am seduced by the satisfaction of checking things off my to do list. To do what is important needs more space for reflection and creation than I tend to leave in my days. And, what's important often doesn't result in a tangible outcome within the day. If I'm lucky, I end up with a scribble in my notebook or on my iPhone along the lines of "something about the shadow side of identity" or "blog on practice".  So, here I am practicing.  Making a bit of space for reflecting and creating. Now the practice is to be happy with the "bit". My book might just get written one bit at a time.

What bit of practice can you add to your week to help you create a life that is a reflection of who are, one little bit a time?

Feb 25-26 Identity Mapping workshop

Identity Mapping®
Bringing Your Uniqueness and Potential to Life
A Program for Clarifying & Articulating your Purpose
Overview
Have you ever wondered what your purpose is or what “connects the dots” of your life? This program will help you answer these questions. Identity Mapping is designed to tap the creativity, wisdom and potential that resides in all of us, allowing us to make the most of who we are
Identity Mapping builds on the unique exercises in The Identity Code: The 8 Essential Questions for Finding Your Purpose and Place in the World by Larry Ackerman (Random House, 2006). The exercises are designed to make unconscious knowledge conscious and thus allow participants to powerfully articulate who they are and how they are unique. The Identity Mapping experience will put you on the path to discovering – and doing – what you were meant to do, where you were meant to do it, and with whom.

Benefits
Participants who take this course will be able to develop stronger relationships…
  • With themselves, in terms of finding purpose, making wiser choices, and increasing their resilience in times of stress and change, by knowing that who they are at their core will not be lost.
  • At work, in terms of realizing greater success by achieving clarity about where they best fit and what they have to offer
  • With one’s spouse or partner, children, and friends, in terms of creating deeper, more genuine connections.
  • With their community, in terms of making a more meaningful contribution.

The Soul is Shy

The name of my site and much of how I think about the relationship with the deepest, most essential parts of myself are inspired by Parker J. Palmer, who wrote:

"The soul is like a wild animal…tough, resilient, resourceful, savvy, and self-sufficient:  it knows how to survive in hard places. Yet despite its toughness, the soul is also shy.  Just like a wild animal, it seeks safety in the dense underbrush, especially when other people are around.  If we want to see a wild animal, we know that the last thing we should do is go crashing through the woods yelling for it to come out.  But if we will walk quietly into the woods, sit patiently at the base of a tree...the wild creature we seek might put in an appearance.~ From the book A Hidden Wholeness

I am also inspired by the work of Larry Ackerman, who said that "Identity is the expression of your soul on earth." For most of my life, I felt my soul had something to say and work it wanted to do in the world, and yet, I could not find the words. While the soul may not be the stuff of words, with words comes clarity and with clarity, action.

Between the work of these two men and the friendship of one, Larry Ackerman, I found the words my soul had been wanting to say and indeed, the clarity to find and create my soul's work. There are practices we can do to find the words and live the work of the soul. My soul's work is to live these practices AND to teach them to others.  Together then, we practice a life of living according to who we really are - at our core.
